Dear St. John Neumann Families,

I am the new Director of Family Faith Formation at St John Neumann Parish. Ann Marie Ong will now be The Director of Sacramental Preparation and Edge. I will be working with families with children in preschool to fifth grade. Ann Marie will still be working with second grade families in sacramental prep along with the Edge Program and Confirmation. I have a background in elementary education and am certified as a Parish Catechetical Leader. I have over 15 years’ experience with PSR and family programs. I am excited to be here and am looking forward to meeting you and your children!

According to the New Directory for Catechesis, “Believing parents, with their daily example of life, have the most effective capacity to transmit the beauty of the Christian faith to their children. . . The Church is called to cooperate with parents . . assisting them in the fulfillment of their educational mission to become above all the first catechists of their own children.” (124).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the role of the family and parents in this way:

“The role of the parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute. . . they have the first responsibility for the education of their children.” (2221, 2223)

In order to better allow parents to witness the Catholic faith in their families, the PSR program is changing! The big change is we will be meeting at St John Neumann Church on Wednesday nights. The program will now be called Family Faith Formation.  We are excited to offer a family-based program that will encourage parents and children to discuss the truths of the Catholic Faith in a comfortable setting. Father Barry and I have devised a program that will be flexible and meet the needs of our families. The plan we have outlined in this letter is dependent on the directives from The Diocese of Cleveland and the CDC. This plan will be updated as needed. Please check our Parish website and your emails for any important information.

What will this program look like?

  • St. John Neumann PSR is now a Family Program. Our program will now focus on forming the faith of the entire family. Parents and children will be learning about the Catholic faith together in a fun and family friendly setting!
  • Once a month parents and children will gather at St. John Neumann on a Wednesday evening from 6:30-7:30 pm.
  • Catechists will meet with small groups of children using the Gospel Weekly from the previous Sunday.  Kindergarten and First Graders will meet using Promise, Second and Third graders will meet using Good News, Fourth and Fifth Graders will meet using Venture. Groups may be mixed age depending on the number of children. Visit for more information.

Parents will stay with Father Barry or Father Pat for catechesis on a topic contained in The Catechism of the Catholic Church: God, Jesus, Sacraments, Morality, Prayer. These presentations will be interactive through use of media and question/answer periods.

We will offer a second Wednesday evening each month for families to participate in a variety of family-centered activities such as: Eucharistic Adoration, Prayer Service, Advent and Lent Reflections, Stations of the Cross, and Stewardship. To maintain social distancing and CDC guidelines, families will need to register in advance for these evenings through Sign-up Genius. Links will be emailed to all families at the beginning of each month.

Each family will receive a Prayer Table Kit to use in their home. Kits will include green, purple and white prayer cloths, standing crucifix, candle, St John Neumann prayer card, family journal and holy water. Families are asked to purchase a bible for the table if they do not have one.

On the Wednesdays we do not meet in person, parents will use the Pflaum Gospel Weekly to read and discuss the Gospel with their children at home. The Gospel Weeklies allow for parents to have discussions with multiage children at the same time. Guidance will be provided through weekly communication from Annette Klanac and the catechists. Parents are asked to devote at least 30 minutes each week to their faith conversations with their children.

Mass attendance will be an important part of this program. Families are asked to attend Mass each week (or watch it virtually through the SJN website). The Gospel weeklies utilize the Sunday readings and offer families the opportunity to explore the Sunday Mass in a whole new way!

There is also an option for families that are not comfortable meeting once or twice a month in person. Please contact me for details.

Once again, I want to thank you for sharing your child(ren) with me as I assist you in guiding them to become future disciples in the world!

God Bless,

Annette Klanac
